Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am glad to know that our organization is hosting an event to celebrate the popular dishes from around the world and I want to request to add my country’s dish in the event.
If you agree to let me bring my dish to the event, it would be really appreciated. I can prepare the food and bring it to the location because I want to represent my country to make people aware about the unique taste of the dish.
My special dish is butter chicken which is actually prepared with all Indian spices. There is a secret spice which I would introduce to the public after they taste it. It is a dish of love and showing people how taste of the dish can bring people closer to each other.
I believe that this is the dish that should be popular worldwide as it is a non- vegetarian dish. It is a dish which 90% of the world’s population would love as they like meat and always ready to try something new.
I hope you would consider my request.
Yours Sincerely,
Manmeet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to bring a dish, described it as butter chicken with Indian spices, and explained its inclusion by highlighting its potential popularity and ability to bring people together. However, the tone is slightly inconsistent; you addressed the letter to 'Dear Sir' instead of 'Dear Luis' as instructed. Additionally, the explanation for why it should be included is somewhat repetitive and relies on generalizations about the world's population. To improve, ensure you follow all instructions precisely and provide more specific, logical reasons for your suggestions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with each addressing a specific part of the task. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the offer, description, and justification. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and repetitive. For example, you frequently start sentences with 'It is a dish...' or 'I...'. Using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases would help the flow of the letter feel more natural and sophisticated. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter format.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'unique taste' and 'non-vegetarian'. However, the vocabulary is generally simple and lacks the precision or variety expected at higher bands. Phrases like 'I want to request to add' could be more naturally expressed as 'I would like to propose including'. There is also a slight misuse of 'popular dishes' in the opening, as you are referring to a specific event. Expanding your range of collocations and using more descriptive adjectives would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For instance, 'I want to request to add my country’s dish in the event' is slightly awkward; 'I would like to contribute a dish from my country to the event' would be more accurate. You also have minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'in the event' instead of 'to the event'. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication, and you show a reasonable level of control over basic sentence construction.
