Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this offer to make a popular dish of my country, which is well known among people of this city. As you are familiar that this event is going to happen at an international level, so I want to participate with my own recipe.

Additionally, this famous dish is called "Sarso ka saag" and "Makki ki roti". It is a traditional food of my nation and it is included in all the functions of my family. The best thing is I am an expert to cooking this dish, because I am making it since last ten years and taught by my grandmother.

To explain further, the ingredients of this recipe are incredibly health and full of nutrition such as mustard leaf, spinach and corn flour. I believe, it would be admire by our judges and audience. So, it should be included in our event.

I look forward to your response and hope to participate in competition with this mouth watering food.

Sincerely,

Navneet kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it as 'Sarso ka saag' and 'Makki ki roti', and provided a clear rationale for its inclusion based on its nutritional value and cultural significance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more detailed; for instance, you could have elaborated more on why the dish would specifically appeal to an international audience beyond just mentioning the judges. Overall, the task is fully covered.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'To explain further', and 'I look forward to'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. For example, the link between the introduction and the second paragraph could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentence structures are a bit repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that ideas flow more naturally from one sentence to the next would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'traditional food', 'nutrition', and 'mouth watering'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I am an expert to cooking' (should be 'at cooking') and 'it would be admire' (should be 'admired'). Additionally, 'incredibly health' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'healthy'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precision in your word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'I am making it since last ten years' (should be 'have been making it for the last ten years') and 'taught by my grandmother' (which is a fragment). There are also minor punctuation and article usage issues. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from being considered error-free. Focusing on verb tenses and sentence completeness will significantly improve your score.
