Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 4.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to draw your attention towards the lack of facilities in our residential area.
There are fewer and unmaintained activities in our building where one can feel serenity or indulge themselves in physical activities, such as a gym area, swimming pool or a well-maintained garden. Apart from it, the park is very congested, with less sitting area, broken swings and lack of garbage bins which further results in not only litterbut also provides matting ground for mosquitos .
I would appreciate if management could make some implements in our residing area, citing installing pilates classes, yoga sessions and building a pool. Moreover, they can replace old swings and provide even ground for children.
Besides that, residents should bring their offspring to the garden or perform some sort of physical activities , while maintaining the cleanliness of public facilities.
Looking forward to your response at your earliest convenience.
Yours faithfully,
Beerpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0
The response is completely off-topic. The prompt required a letter to an event organiser named Luis regarding a food celebration event. Instead, the student wrote a letter to an unspecified 'Sir/Madam' complaining about residential facilities and the lack of a gym or swimming pool. Because the student failed to address any of the bullet points (offering a dish, describing it, or explaining its inclusion), the response fails to meet the requirements of the task entirely. It does not address the prompt's scenario, purpose, or audience.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The letter is structured with a clear opening and closing, and the paragraphs are logically separated. The student uses some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from it', 'Moreover', and 'Besides that' to link ideas. However, because the content is entirely irrelevant to the task, the logical progression of the intended argument is irrelevant to the prompt. Within the context of the text provided, the flow is acceptable, but it does not serve the purpose of the IELTS task.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a reasonable range of vocabulary, such as 'serenity', 'congested', 'offspring', and 'convenience'. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'make some implements' (likely meaning 'improvements') and 'matting ground for mosquitos' (likely meaning 'breeding ground'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to express the student's complaints, it is not used in the context of the required task, which limits the ability to demonstrate the appropriate register for a letter to an event organiser.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'There are fewer and unmaintained activities' (awkward phrasing), 'litterbut' (spelling/spacing error), and 'perform some sort of physical activities' (slightly unnatural). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with spacing around commas. The grammar is sufficient to convey the meaning of the complaint, but the errors are frequent enough to be noticeable.
