Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope the event planning is going smooth. As a member of an International Students' club I would like to participate in the exciting event and I am writing this letter to request you to provide me a spacious stall so I can represent a popular dish from home country called Biryani at the event.

Firstly, I would like to give you the details about the dish which is a staple from the state that I come from. Basically, Long grain rice and tender meat are the main ingredients of this dish. Because of its rich aroma, spices packed full of flavor. I would like to present this scrumptious dish to people coming to the event from all around the world.

Consequently, it is highly appreciated dish because of the time it takes to marinate the meat and it is slow cooked under the layers of steamed rice. I look forward to hear from you as I am ecstatic to participate in the fantastic event.

Thankyou for the consideration.

Kind regards,

Lisa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make Biryani, described its ingredients and preparation, and explained why it is a suitable addition to the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is slightly limited; for instance, the explanation of why it should be included is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could expand on the cultural significance of the dish or how it would enhance the international atmosphere of the event. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly' and 'Consequently' to guide the reader. However, the transition between the description of the dish and the explanation of its inclusion is a bit abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, which helps the reader follow your argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'scrumptious', 'marinate', and 'aroma' effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'going smooth' instead of 'going smoothly' and 'from home country' instead of 'from my home country'. While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, there is room for more precision and natural collocations. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I look forward to hear from you' (should be 'hearing'), 'the event planning is going smooth' (should be 'smoothly'), and 'under the layers' (should be 'in layers'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on verb patterns (e.g., 'look forward to + -ing') and ensure consistent use of articles and adverbs. Your control of basic grammar is generally good, but more attention to detail is needed for complex structures.
