Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to formally bring to your attention regarding the event in which we will celebrate the most famous dishes from different countries.

To begin with, I will make Shahi Paneer with Naan bread, which is the one of the most likely food from India. This dish is easy to make and can be found in every restaurant very easily. Most of the population love this food.

It is basically made of Paneer Cheese and the gravy is made of tomato and Onion and Naan bread is made of Wheat Flour. Furthermore, for giving it more flavor we add some spices too. Moreover, the reason for bringing the naan is that It's one of the most common way of eating as a side dish.

The reason for bringing this dish in this event is that it will be representing my country by the most famous traditional food which is Paneer and Naan bread. Also, it is a vegetarian dish so everyone can have it without any worry.

Your Sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the description of the dish is quite basic, and the explanation for why it should be included could be more persuasive. To improve, try to provide more descriptive detail about the sensory experience of the food or the cultural significance behind it, rather than just listing ingredients. Overall, the response is relevant and clearly communicates your intentions to the recipient.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The flow between sentences is generally clear, but the connection between the ingredients and the reason for inclusion could be smoother. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the progression of ideas feels more natural and less like a list of separate points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the dish and its ingredients clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'vegetarian dish' and 'traditional food'. However, there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'easy to make' and 'made of'. There are also some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the one of the most likely food', which is not idiomatic. To improve, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and varied verbs to describe the preparation and appeal of the food, which will help make your writing more engaging and sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For instance, 'the one of the most likely food' contains an article error and an incorrect noun form. You also have issues with capitalisation, such as 'Onion' and 'It's', and some awkward phrasing like 'the reason for bringing the naan is that It's one of the most common way'. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring consistent capitalisation. Proofreading for these small errors will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
