Student answer (Band 6.0)

Task 1

Dear Sir,

I am Harneet Kaur, one of the front-end associates at your store. I am writing to kindly request you to shorten my working hours as I am plannig to enrol in a short-term pharmacy assistant course.

It is evident that the healthcare sector is gaining popularity in the present scenario owing to which I want to pursue my studies in this growing field. With regard to my availability, I would be open to work on weekends including Friday and be able to work after 3pm on Thursday. Following this schedule, I would be able to balance my work with study.

The reason why I am taking this program is not only to step into a high-demand category but also it would benefit my current job. As, being a pharmacy assistant I would get practical learning of medications, health and safety standards along with first-aid training. Consequently, I would use all my skills and knowledge for our store whenever it required.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Harneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 2.0

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt explicitly asks you to write to 'Luis' regarding an international food event, but you have written a formal request to an employer regarding a change in working hours. Because you have failed to address any of the bullet points (offering a dish, describing it, or explaining its inclusion), the task achievement score is severely impacted. While the letter format is technically correct, the content does not fulfill the requirements of the task set by the examiner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing and appropriate salutations. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Consequently', and 'With regard to' to link your ideas. The progression of the argument is clear, even though the content is irrelevant to the prompt. If the content had matched the task, this would be a strong performance in terms of structure and flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal request, such as 'healthcare sector', 'high-demand category', and 'practical learning'. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is generally precise and appropriate for a professional context. You successfully convey your meaning, even though the topic is incorrect for the given task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The grammar is generally accurate with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'The reason why I am taking this program is not only to step into a high-demand category but also it would benefit my current job.' There are minor slips, such as 'whenever it required' (should be 'whenever it is required'), but these do not impede communication. The control of punctuation and sentence structure is quite good.
