Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Luis,
I am writing to express my interest in presenting a renowned Indian food dish to celebrate this food festival.
To begin with, I am a regular member of an International students club in Canada. I am fond of Masala Dosa mainly because it is rich and full of flavour. This is a South-Indian dish with a crispy crepe filled with potato curry, it is usually served with sambhar and chutney. In addition, Masala Dosa has a mild and comforting taste which is suitable for any foreigner who would love to try it. Lastly, if I offer this cuisine to celebrate the global food event, I believe it would be a great opportunity for me to introduce the local ingredients and Indian culture.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could send the details to participate in this event.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Payal Bhakta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly offer to make a dish, describe the Masala Dosa, and explain its suitability for the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. While you mention that the dish is 'rich and full of flavour', expanding slightly more on the cultural significance or the specific preparation process would have provided a more comprehensive response. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is fully informed of your intentions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use transition signals such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the purpose of the letter from the descriptive details. The flow of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is generally clear. To reach a higher band, you could vary your cohesive devices further, as some of the current transitions are quite standard. Nevertheless, the progression of information is logical and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'renowned Indian food dish', 'crispy crepe', and 'local ingredients' show an ability to use topic-specific language effectively. There is a minor error in the opening where you address the recipient as 'Mr. Luis'; in English, it is more natural to use 'Dear Luis' as instructed, or 'Dear Mr. [Surname]'. Aside from this, the word choice is precise and conveys your meaning clearly. You have used enough vocabulary to allow for some flexibility, though incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations would enhance the overall quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which are generally accurate. For example, the use of a relative clause in 'which is suitable for any foreigner who would love to try it' is well-constructed. There is a minor punctuation error in the second paragraph: 'This is a South-Indian dish with a crispy crepe filled with potato curry, it is usually served...' is a comma splice. This should be two separate sentences or joined with a semicolon. Despite this, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar is consistent throughout the letter.
