Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to make a little consideration by offering the dish for our country. Our country has a lot of popular food around the world but the most unique one is rajmah.

The preparation of the dish takes a lot of time. Firstly the kidney beans needs to be soaked for around 10 hours. Then in a hot pan a little oil with some chopped garlic, onion and ginger cooked until it turns red and then a pinch of tumeric, coriander powder, few tomatoes with green chili. We have to cooked until it turns red and simultaneously the kidney beans should be boiled. After that the masala is mixed with kidney beans and again it is kept for cooking for around half an hour and served with fresh coriander or methi leaves.

The main reason to include this food in the event is because it us very healthy contains protein and has the aura.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You offer to make a dish, describe it, and explain why it should be included. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. The description of the dish is essentially a recipe, which is helpful, but the explanation of why it should be included is quite brief and vague, mentioning only that it is 'healthy' and 'contains protein'. To improve, you should expand on the cultural significance or the sensory appeal of the dish to better persuade the event organiser. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a club member.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Then', and 'After that' to sequence the steps of the recipe. However, the transition between the introduction and the recipe is a bit abrupt. Additionally, the final paragraph is quite short and lacks a concluding sentence to wrap up the letter effectively. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, and the overall flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using specific terms related to cooking like 'soaked', 'chopped', 'turmeric', and 'coriander'. However, there are some awkward word choices, such as 'make a little consideration' and 'has the aura', which do not sound natural in this context. There are also some minor errors in word formation, such as 'tumeric' (spelled turmeric) and 'methi'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary choices are appropriate for the formal tone of a letter to an organiser.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'the kidney beans needs to be soaked' (subject-verb agreement error), 'We have to cooked' (incorrect verb form), and 'it us very healthy' (likely a typo for 'is'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage in the recipe section. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tenses will improve your accuracy.
