Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to offer to make well-known food from my country, India, at an event, which is going to be held on 20th September.

As you may already be aware, I have been a valuable member of your club association for eight years. Recently, I received an email notification that our club is organizing a popular food event from around the world. When I read that notification, I was extremely excited because this event provides me with the opportunity to demonstrate my cooking skills.

At the event, I would like to present a South Indian dish, namely Dosa. This dish is one of the popular dishes in our nation, which is considered a light meal filled with potato stuffing. It has an oval-shaped appearance with a savoury and crunchy texture. I am assured, if I introduce this dish at our event, people from different cultures would definitely try it.

The main reasons why I believe it should be included in the event because firstly, it is an Indian dish. As a result, people from different backgrounds would love to explore it. Secondly, its unique, mouth-watering appearance would captivate people's attention to try it.

I would be grateful if you could consider my offer to recommend this dish to present at an event.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Rashim

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a descriptive account of the Dosa, and explained why it would be a valuable addition to the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the dish's appearance and texture. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of why it should be included is more distinct from the description of the dish itself, as the current reasoning relies slightly on repetition.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'As you may already be aware', 'At the event', and 'As a result' to connect your ideas. However, the transition between the description of the dish and the reasons for its inclusion could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'valuable member', 'demonstrate', 'savoury', 'crunchy', and 'captivate'. These choices are generally accurate and appropriate for the context. There are no significant spelling errors, and your word choice is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely. To improve further, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions that sound natural in a formal letter, such as 'I would be delighted to contribute' instead of 'I would like to present'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'When I read that notification, I was extremely excited' shows good control of complex syntax. Most of your sentences are error-free; however, there is a minor grammatical slip in the fourth paragraph: 'The main reasons why I believe it should be included in the event because...' is missing a verb (e.g., 'is that'). Despite this, your control over punctuation and sentence construction is strong, and your meaning is never obscured by grammatical errors.
