Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Luis.

My name is Karan Jadav and I am the member of the 'International Students' Club. It has been come to attention that the club is organizing an event to celebrate food around the world. I am writting this letter to express my suggestions.

I am from India. Which is world's most diverse country. I want to prepare "Samosa" for the event. Which consist of meshed potato and green beans and some herbs and spices. Served with tangy sauce. Although India is very big and diverse country but this particular dish "Samosa" is unite everyone. It has been served in restaurants and tea parties, birthday parties from North India to South India and East india to West India. It always included in break fasts and in even evening snakes. It is an ample part of my indian food culture. This dish is pure vegitarian dish. So, everyone at the event can enjoy it.

In my opinion this dish should be included in the festival so every internation student present at the event can enjoy it and can get to know my indian culture.

Thank you for your time.

Best regards,

Karan Jadav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organizer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the description of the 'Samosa' is clear, the explanation for its inclusion could be more persuasive by focusing more on its cultural significance or popularity rather than just its vegetarian nature. The response is well-structured and covers all requirements, though it lacks a slightly more sophisticated level of detail to reach the higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. The use of cohesive devices is present, such as 'Although' and 'In my opinion', but some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the frequent use of sentence fragments starting with 'Which' (e.g., 'Which consist of...') disrupts the flow and cohesion between sentences. Improving the connection between these ideas would enhance the overall readability and logical flow of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the dish and its cultural context effectively. There are some attempts at using descriptive language like 'tangy sauce' and 'diverse country'. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'writting', 'meshed' instead of 'mashed', 'vegitarian', 'snakes' instead of 'snacks') and some awkward word choices. While these errors do not prevent the message from being understood, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider range of precise vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with sentence fragments and punctuation. For example, 'Which consist of...' and 'Which is world's most diverse country' are incomplete sentences. There are also issues with article usage ('the member', 'the event') and subject-verb agreement. While the meaning is clear, the frequency of these errors limits the score. To improve, the student should focus on connecting clauses correctly rather than using fragments and pay closer attention to basic grammar rules.
