Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis, Hope your are doing great.I just heard about an event on popular food from all around the globe. As you know I am also a member of International Student’s club.I also have a chance to express a popular food from my country.

I think that Mutton Karahi should be on the list.Because In my country, people love to have it on normal as well as special ocassions. This dish is prepared by cutting the meat obtained from the ribs of a goat into small pieces. Then it is placed in a big container and large amount of sauces and blend of spices is put into it.Then after 12-15 minutes about 125 ml of yoghurt is added into it to make a thick paste of gravy. Then little amount of water is also added and after 30-45 minutes the dish is prepared.People in our country love it because of the flavours and juiciness of the dish. With the dish, people love to have with bread naan or paratha.

Looking at the likeness of people here I assume that it would be a best dish from my country.I hope people will like it the most and it will be the most loved dish in the event. If you need any further information about the dish, feel easy to ask about it.Thanks

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a detailed description of Mutton Karahi, and explained why it is a suitable choice for the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club member. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of why the dish should be included is more persuasive and linked directly to the event's goal of celebrating global food, rather than just focusing on its popularity in your home country. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the description and finally the justification. Paragraphing is present, though the indentation and spacing could be more professional. You use some cohesive devices like 'Then' and 'Because', but these are somewhat repetitive and mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') to improve the flow between sentences. Referencing is generally clear, and the letter is easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly, such as 'juiciness', 'flavours', and 'thick paste'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'express a popular food' (instead of 'contribute a dish') and 'Looking at the likeness of people' (instead of 'Given the popularity'). Spelling errors like 'ocassions' also occur. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your word choices are natural in the context of a formal or semi-formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'Hope your are doing great' (Hope you are), 'In my country, people love to have it on normal as well as special ocassions' (fragmented sentence), and 'it would be a best dish' (it would be the best dish). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing after periods. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for basic sentence structure errors to ensure your writing is more polished.
