Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luis,
I am writing to participate for upcoming food festival, where we will be celebrating popular food from around the world. I would like to prepare the Vadapav, which is India’s top selling fast food item in 2025.
Firstly, the dish is easy and quick to prepare. The dish consist bun and petty, which is deep fried. The patty is made out of boiled potatoes, cilantro, green chillies and table spoon of Indian spices. Secondly, the dish also consist adding green sauce inside the buns, which is made out of mint, cilantro, green chillies, garlic, and ginger. The patty is stuffed inside buns, and buns are toasted with butter before hand.
Also, I believe this dish represents the Indian culture, where people usually eat it on their way to work or as an evening snack. The main quality of Vadapav are tasty, quick to make and affordable to pocket. Therefore, I strongly believe that students will love it, because it is full of vitamins, iron, carbs, and healthy fat.
Furthermore, I request you to accept my offer to make this food. Should you require more details about the ingredients or photos, I am happy to assist you further.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Kind regards,
Neel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly offer to make a dish, describe it in detail, and provide a logical explanation for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the ingredients and the cultural context of the dish. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening sentence is grammatically accurate, as 'participate for' is incorrect usage. Overall, the task requirements are fully met with relevant and well-supported information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Also', and 'Furthermore' to link your points. While these are effective, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking phrases to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'top selling fast food item' and 'affordable to pocket' are understandable, though 'affordable to pocket' is not a standard collocation. You attempt to use descriptive language for the ingredients, which adds detail to your response. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic or formal vocabulary. For instance, instead of 'easy and quick', you could use 'convenient and efficient'. There are minor issues with word choice, but these do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. For example, 'I am writing to participate for' should be 'participate in', and 'the dish consist bun' should be 'the dish consists of a bun'. Additionally, there are minor errors with articles ('the' before 'Vadapav') and pluralisation ('the main quality... are'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your control over subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your score.
