Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing concerning the recent food event in our college. If you have any empty stalls, I would love to prepare a popular sweet dish from India.
Our college's student community is significantly diverse and we have food items from different parts of the world. I have noticed that most of the cuisines are spicy or tangy such as pizza, pasta, and butter chicken. Although we have so many Indian food stalls, surprisingly none of them are offering a sweet dish.
So, I would like to offer something, that we can enjoy after trying all the spicy cuisines from event and I came up with the idea of 'Rasmalai'. This dish is originates from North India and prepared with sugar, condense milk and whole wheat flour. It is slighty sweet in taste and smooth in texture. It almost takes 12 hours of preparation to make it perfectly. At the end, we can also add some dry fruits to enhance the taste.
Thank you for considering my request at the last moment. I hope to hear from you soon.
Best regards,
Rajveer

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a description of 'Rasmalai', and explained why it is a valuable addition to the event by highlighting the lack of sweet options. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your purpose immediately. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail on the cultural significance of the dish to further enhance the 'why' section, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'So', and 'At the end' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraph could be more fluid to better connect the observation about the lack of sweets to your specific proposal.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'significantly diverse', 'cuisines', and 'enhance'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'condense milk' (should be 'condensed milk') and 'This dish is originates' (a grammatical error affecting lexical flow). While you successfully communicate your ideas, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or descriptive adjectives to make your writing more vivid and engaging for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'This dish is originates' (incorrect verb form), 'It almost takes 12 hours' (word order), and 'from event' (missing article). Additionally, 'slighty' is a spelling error. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex structures, such as using more relative clauses or conditional sentences, would also strengthen this area.
