Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to offer my assistance to the club. I believe that my contribution could be particularly valuable in making the event more successful and engaging. I would be delighted to offer the most famous dish from our country which is palak paneer.

In terms of its ingredients of the dish, it is spinach curry with some fried cottage cheese cubes in it with some Indian spices. Apart from its taste, it is also highly nutritional as it is a rich source of iron and protein in it.

Furthermore, I believe that this item should be in the menu because it attracts a large proportion of customers towards it because most of the customers want some kind of protein in their diet and also they could know the taste of different country. As a result, I am confident that this suggestion would appeal to the target audience and contribute to the overall success of the event.

I would be grateful if you could consider my suggestion. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you require any further information or assistance from me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Kashish

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a descriptive explanation of the ingredients, and gave logical reasons for its inclusion in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a professional yet friendly register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task instructions. You have maintained a consistent focus on the purpose of the letter, ensuring that the reader understands both the nature of the contribution and the rationale behind it. The response is well-structured and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the description of the dish, the justification for its inclusion, and finally the closing. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In terms of', and 'As a result' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the text. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the sentences is clear, making the letter easy to follow for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'particularly valuable', 'highly nutritional', and 'target audience' demonstrate a good command of language. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for the context, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to reach a higher band. For instance, instead of 'some kind of protein', you could use 'a significant source of protein'. Overall, your word choice is precise enough to communicate your ideas without any ambiguity or confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You have demonstrated a good control of grammatical structures, using a mix of simple and complex sentences. Most of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. There are minor issues, such as the redundant use of 'in it' in the sentence 'it is a rich source of iron and protein in it', and the phrasing 'know the taste of different country' which would be better as 'experience the cuisine of a different country'. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the letter.
