Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing this letter to suggest one of the delicious Indian dishes named Dosa, which is served with sambhar and coconut chutney. This recipe is made with rice, lentils, and fenugreek, which are all mixed with water and leave it for over night for fermentation. In addition, sambhar is made with all the veggies and coconut chutney is made with coconut, green chillies, and salt. It has enormous benefits; therefore, I wanted to add it to this event. It helps with gut health problems and is easily digestible.
Moreover, I believe that Dosa is a really old recipe from our ancestors, who always made it in the morning. The root of this Dish comes from the Middle East; when people came to visit our country, they gave the recipe to our citizens.
Furthermore, I would like to inform you that I will make this dish myself for everyone, as I love cooking and I am eagerly waiting to make it and let you try this food.
Your sincerely,
S

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly offer to make a Dosa, describe its ingredients and preparation, and explain its benefits for the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven; while the description of the dish is detailed, the explanation of why it should be included is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that the justification for including the dish is more directly linked to the event's purpose of celebrating international food, rather than focusing solely on health benefits.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to transition between ideas. While these are generally effective, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the introduction of the dish to its history and finally to your offer to cook. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further and ensure that the relationship between sentences is always smooth and natural rather than relying on standard linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using specific terms like 'fermentation', 'digestible', and 'ancestors'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'enormous benefits' which is slightly unnatural in this context, and the historical claim about the Middle East seems factually questionable, though this does not impede communication. You attempt to use descriptive language, but the range is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more sophisticated collocations and precise adjectives to describe the food and the event, moving beyond basic descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'leave it for over night' (should be 'left overnight') and 'Your sincerely' (should be 'Yours sincerely'). Additionally, the sentence 'when people came to visit our country, they gave the recipe to our citizens' is a bit clunky. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they indicate a lack of consistent control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
