Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing to propose my contribution on the upcoming food event of the club.
I wanted to make a popular dish from my home country. It is called "Sarson ka Saag" and "Makki ki Roti". It has been renowned since ages in North India. If we include this dish in our food festival. I am sure many students will like it as there are many Indian students in our university.
This dish is made from green leafy vegetables which is quite nutritious and rich in protein. It is accompained by Makki Roti which is a flatbread made up of corn flour. It is considered very healthy in winters.
I believe this cuisine will be appreciated by all the peers. It depicts the cultural food of Punjab,India. I am confident that students from other countries will love the flavour of this dish.
I hope you will consider my dish for the event. Look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully
Tanmeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, provided a clear description of 'Sarson ka Saag' and 'Makki ki Roti', and explained why it would be a valuable addition to the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To improve, you could expand slightly on the 'why' section by linking the dish more explicitly to the goal of celebrating global food, perhaps by mentioning how it introduces students to specific regional traditions. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'It is called', 'This dish is', and 'I believe'. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly. For example, the transition between the description of the dish and the explanation of why it should be included is a bit abrupt. Additionally, ensure that your paragraphing is consistent; the current structure is functional, but more sophisticated transitions would elevate the coherence of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some specific terms like 'nutritious', 'protein', and 'flatbread', which are appropriate for the context. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'renowned since ages' (a more natural phrasing would be 'has been popular for generations') and 'accompained' (spelling error). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise adjectives or idiomatic expressions related to food and cultural exchange would help you achieve a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the sentence fragment 'If we include this dish in our food festival. I am sure...', which should be a single complex sentence. You also have a minor punctuation error in 'Punjab,India' (missing a space). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on sentence combining to avoid fragments and ensure consistent subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of complex structures, such as using relative clauses or conditional forms more accurately, would improve your score.
