Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Hello Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email in regard to suggest one more addition of the food item in our upcoming 'Popular food from around the world' event going to held on next Saturday. I would really appreciate your consideration to add an Indian item that's call Samosa Chaat.

I believe that our current menu is missing a sweet and savory element which this item can abruptly fulfill. Talking about this item, it's basically a fried puff pastry filled with a a comforting potato and peas filling. Also the reason why I am mentioning the word 'comforting' is because it is one of my comfort foods from my home country. This item is drizzled with a sweet and spicy chutneys and finished with a spoonful of yogurt to balance the overpowering spicy flavours from chutneys.

Well, the reason why I am approaching you to add this item on our menu is because the people who will be attending the event will surely look for some fascinating dishes which will blow their palate and I believe that this is very much capable of doing this.

Let me know your inputs on this. Thanks for time.

Best regards,

Sakshi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You offered to make a dish, provided a clear description of the Samosa Chaat, and gave a logical explanation for why it should be included in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the start. The ideas are well-developed, and you have maintained a consistent focus throughout the letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening sentence is more natural; for example, 'I am writing to suggest an addition' is more direct than 'I am writing this email in regard to suggest'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the proposal to the description and finally the justification. You use cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'Well', and 'I believe that' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or informal, such as starting a paragraph with 'Well'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using descriptive terms like 'sweet and savory', 'comforting', and 'drizzled'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'abruptly fulfill' (which does not fit the context) and 'that's call' (should be 'that is called'). Additionally, 'blow their palate' is slightly unnatural; 'delight their palates' or 'impress the attendees' would be more idiomatic. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'going to held' (should be 'going to be held') and 'a a comforting' (repetition). You also have a minor error in 'Thanks for time' (should be 'Thanks for your time'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that passive constructions are formed correctly. Most of your sentences are clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate.
