Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. It is going be excellent opportunity to organize an event to celebrate well-known food from around the world.
I belongs to India, and it is widely known that India is rich in tradition food and flavorful dishes. I am thinking to represent famous dish from our culture called 'CHOLE-BHATURE' , which is not only delicious but also deeply connected to our Indian heritage and traditions.
It is a popular north Indian dish made with spicy chickpeas (chole) served with fluffy, deep-fried bread (bhature). It is often enjoyed during the festivals, celebration and and family gatherings, Chole-Bhature brings people together and represents the rich flavors and diversity of Indian cuisine.
The foremost reason to include Chole-Bhature in the event is to showcase our rich Indian culture and culinary heritage through a dish that is both delicious and widely loved. It brings a sense of tradition, celebration, and togetherness, making it a perfect representation of our culture.
I am really excited to take part in this event. Let me know if you have any spots left.
Yours sincerely,
Nidhi Patel

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly offer to make a dish, provide a vivid description of 'Chole-Bhature', and explain its cultural significance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed, and the letter maintains a consistent focus on the topic throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening sentence flows more naturally, as the current phrasing is slightly awkward. Overall, the task requirements are fully met with relevant and well-supported information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the description, the justification, and finally the closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'The foremost reason' and 'not only... but also' effectively to link your thoughts. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, which contributes to a natural reading experience.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'culinary heritage', 'flavorful', and 'diversity' appropriately. The language is generally precise and fits the context of a food-related event well. There are a few minor word choice issues, such as 'tradition food' instead of 'traditional food' and 'I belongs to' instead of 'I am from'. However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to show a wider range of lexical control, though your current vocabulary is sufficient for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'It is going be excellent opportunity' (missing 'an') and 'I belongs to', the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. You successfully use relative clauses and compound sentences to convey your ideas. Punctuation is generally accurate, though there is a minor error with a double 'and' in the third paragraph. The errors present are non-systematic and do not cause any difficulty for the reader, reflecting a good level of control over grammar.
