Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis

I hope this letter finds you well. The reason I am writing this letter is that I want to participate in the event happening at our place.

Firstly, I am interested in cooking delicious dishes for individuals, and this is the best opportunity for me to check my ability regarding my cooking skills. Moreover, I will prepare ' Royal cottage cheese' which is a famous dish in my nation and it can be prepared by the easily available ingredients in the market. It could be a bit spicy with creamy texture, because I prefer to use whipping cream just to maintain the spice level and Tofu, it also includes some Indian spices. which gives an unique look and taste to the overall dish.

Finally, as in this event most of the students from different nations will participate and prepare the popular food of their country, therefore I also want to include my dish in this event. Although only few people will eat spicy food nowadays, it is the best option for some of them to try it with creamy flavor. I await your prompt response to this letter.

yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly offer to make a dish, describe it as a spicy, creamy 'Royal cottage cheese' using Indian spices and Tofu, and explain its inclusion by noting the multicultural nature of the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, you could provide more vivid detail about the dish's preparation or cultural significance to further develop your ideas. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the reader is fully informed about your intentions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through your points. However, the paragraphing is slightly underdeveloped, as the body of the letter is compressed into one large block. Using more varied linking phrases and ensuring each paragraph focuses on a single clear idea would improve the flow. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'easily available ingredients' and 'maintain the spice level' are functional and accurate. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'at our place' which is slightly vague, and 'an unique' (should be 'a unique'). You attempt to use descriptive language, but the range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more precise culinary terminology or more sophisticated adjectives to describe the flavor profile of your dish, which would elevate the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'it can be prepared by the easily available ingredients' (should be 'with'), and punctuation errors, such as the period before 'which gives an unique look'. Additionally, 'only few people' should be 'only a few people'. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on refining your use of articles and prepositions, and ensure that your complex sentences are punctuated correctly to avoid fragments.
