Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

Hope you are doing well !!

I am writing this letter to inform you that the club is organising an international food event.

I am wondering if we can make a regional dish at that event to promote the culture of our country. Can we add that cuisine to the event stalls, which can directly present the best foods of our country?

With your suggestion, can we try to make the very popular sweet dish " Mong ka halwa" of our country to promote the dine-ins? It is better if you can arrange a professional Indian chef who can make this possible and elevate our culture on that big platform.

In my opinion, this event adds to the sense of variety we have in our Indian culture. Everybody has to know about the excellent taste we have, and eventually, we would present it to the international market.

Yours sincerely,

John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it as a popular sweet dish called 'Mong ka halwa', and explained its value in promoting cultural variety. However, the task asks you to offer to make the dish yourself, but you then suggest that Luis should 'arrange a professional Indian chef'. This creates a contradiction in your response, as you are not actually offering to make it yourself. To improve, ensure your ideas are consistent throughout the letter. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, though the development of your ideas could be more focused on your personal contribution.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, the proposal, and the reasoning. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between 'I am wondering if we can make a regional dish' and 'Can we add that cuisine to the event stalls' is slightly repetitive. Using a wider variety of cohesive devices, such as 'Furthermore' or 'Consequently', would help the ideas connect more naturally. The referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of the letter is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'promote', 'cuisine', and 'elevate'. However, there are some awkward word choices that affect the naturalness of the expression. For instance, 'promote the dine-ins' is not a standard collocation in this context, and 'present the best foods of our country' is slightly simplistic. While your meaning is clear, you rely on some basic phrasing. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to food and cultural events, such as 'showcase traditional delicacies' or 'highlight our culinary heritage'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'Everybody has to know about the excellent taste we have', which sounds slightly unnatural; a better phrasing would be 'It is important for people to experience the unique flavors'. Additionally, the use of '!!' in the opening is too informal for a letter. While your grammar is generally functional and does not impede communication, you should aim for more variety in your complex sentence structures and ensure that your punctuation remains formal throughout the letter.
