Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to offer you that I am ready to prepare a dish called "biryani" which is famous dish in my country Pakistan. As I am expert in cooking biryani.

you are among the club organisers and struggling to find the people from different countries to make a variety of dishes. Before joining this club i was working as chief in a charity organisation that is working for the children suffering from terminal diseases like cancer, leukemia and thalassemia. Most of the children are at the last of their lives and might not be able to see their next birthdays. I used to make biryani for them and i still remember the expression of those children while they were enjoying to have biryani.

I will explain a bit more about this dish it is mainly consists of rice and chiken with some add on spices like onion, garlic and ginger. All these make this dish very delicious.

kindly add my dish in this event i am desperately waiting to hear from you.

Thank in advance.

Sincerely,

iram shahnaz

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. However, the development of these ideas is uneven. The section regarding your past work experience is quite long and only tangentially related to the task, while the description of the dish itself is brief. To improve, focus more on the specific requirements of the prompt—such as why the dish is a good fit for the event—rather than providing extensive personal anecdotes. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an organizer, though it could be slightly more professional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your message. However, the logical progression between ideas is sometimes weak. For instance, the transition from your offer to cook to your past work experience is abrupt. You rely on basic cohesive devices, and some sentences feel disconnected. To reach a higher band, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition') to connect your sentences and ideas more smoothly. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus to improve the overall flow of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message, such as 'terminal diseases' and 'variety of dishes'. However, there are several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'chief' instead of 'chef' and 'chiken' instead of 'chicken'. Additionally, phrases like 'at the last of their lives' are unnatural. To improve, focus on learning the correct spelling of common nouns and using more precise collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives for food would also enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I am writing this letter to offer you that I am ready' (awkward phrasing), 'Before joining this club i was working' (capitalization error), and 'it is mainly consists of' (incorrect verb form). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization and sentence boundaries. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that you proofread your work to correct basic errors in capitalization and verb tense consistency.
