Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing this letter to express my excitement about upcoming event of celebrating popular food from various countries, organized by our International Students' club so I also want to make my own country's well-known dish.
Fortunately, I would love to participate in this opportunity where I will get a chance to show my own traditional dish called Saro da Sagg, consist of several leaves and spices which enhance the flavour and Maki di roti, a thick flat bread of corn flour. Together, they are typically served hot with ghee or butter, makes the whole dish out of the world.
I believe this dish should be included in the event due to its popularity, additionally it will represent North Indian cuisine that highlights seasonal winter harvesting tradition, since in our university is a hub where students are from different countries so this opportunity may provide them a different authentic experience.
I would be very happy to prepare this dish for the event. Looking forward to hear back.
Regards,
Amandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, described it as 'Saro da Sagg' and 'Maki di roti', and provided a logical explanation for its inclusion, focusing on cultural representation and the university's diverse environment. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organizer. To reach a higher band, ensure that your descriptions are slightly more detailed and that the connection between the dish and the event is fully elaborated to show a more sophisticated engagement with the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Fortunately', 'additionally', and 'since', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, such as the opening sentence which is a long, run-on structure. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your referencing (e.g., 'this opportunity') is always clear and precise to maintain a smoother progression of ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'authentic experience', 'traditional dish', and 'cuisine'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'out of the world' (which should be 'out of this world') and 'seasonal winter harvesting tradition'. While these do not impede communication, they show a need for more precise collocation. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated descriptive adjectives and ensure that idiomatic expressions are used accurately in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. For example, 'upcoming event of celebrating' should be 'the upcoming event celebrating', and 'Looking forward to hear back' should be 'Looking forward to hearing back'. Additionally, there are some punctuation and article errors, such as 'since in our university is a hub'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit your score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and gerund usage.
