Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. You successfully identified the dish as a samosa and provided a rationale for its inclusion. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why it should be included relies on general statements about health and popularity rather than specific, persuasive arguments tailored to an international student club event. To reach a higher band, ensure your supporting details are more fully developed and clearly linked to the context of the event.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally disjointed. For example, the transition between describing the ingredients and explaining why it should be included is abrupt. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'The main reason', but the overall structure feels a bit mechanical. Additionally, the punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization, which occasionally disrupts the logical progression of your ideas. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring consistent paragraph structure will enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the dish and its ingredients effectively. You use some specific terms like 'traditional', 'ingredients', and 'delicious'. However, there are several instances of informal or imprecise language, such as 'wanna', 'king of' (instead of 'kind of'), and 'finger licking'. These choices limit the professional tone required for a formal letter. To improve, focus on using more precise, formal vocabulary and avoid colloquialisms. Spelling errors, such as 'spicey' and 'Panjab', also detract from the overall quality of your lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('there are many international students... most of them are from Panjab'), incorrect preposition usage, and missing articles. Punctuation is also a significant area for improvement, particularly with the placement of commas and the capitalization of words like 'Luis' and 'SAMOSA'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of basic sentence construction.
