Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am happy to contribute to the food event by preparing a famous dish from my country.

I would like to make kheer, which is traditional Indian dessert made with milk, rice and sugar. It is usually served cold and often prepared during festivals and special occasions.

I believe kheer would be a great choice for the event because it is delicious, simple and popular among people of different ages. Moreover, it would give international students an opportunity to taste a traditional Indian dessert and learn more about our food culture.

I would be grateful if you could le me know how many people are expected to attend the event so that I can prepare enough kheer for everyone. Please also let me know if I can use the kitchen facilities at the venue.

I look forward to participating in the excited event.

Yours sincerely,

Vishal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a concise description of 'kheer', and offered a logical explanation for why it should be included in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a polite and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of an international students' club. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'because' effectively to link your ideas. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the offer to the description, the justification, and finally the logistical questions. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use terms like 'contribute', 'traditional', and 'facilities' correctly. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations. For example, instead of 'simple', you might use 'straightforward to prepare'. There are no significant errors in word choice, and the language used is natural and appropriate for the context of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You show good control over a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, which ensures clear communication. There is a minor typo ('le me know' instead of 'let me know') and a slight collocation error in the final paragraph ('excited event' should be 'exciting event'). However, these are minor slips that do not impede understanding. Your use of punctuation and sentence construction is generally accurate and supports the flow of your writing.
