Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing with a recommendation of a food item in the upcoming event that we are organizing to celebrate famous food from each continent of the world.
I would like to recommend a famous dish from my country, India. As all know, India is a diverse country. It has numerous dishes that had recently got viral on social media due to the richness of different flavors, level of spice, and the ways of cooking.
The name of the dish, which I would like to add in this event is the Biryani. Ingredients required for this dish are some basmati rice, fried onion, a lot of tomatoes with colorful vegetables. The special ingredient of this dish is saffron, which not only provide a different taste to eater but it also helps in the digestion of food.
I would like to add this dish in this event since everybody would love to eat rice, and this dish can be cooked for both vegetarian and non- vegetarian by just choosing vegetables or either chicken.
I would like to discuss it in more depth at your earliest convenience.
Yours Sincerely,
Amandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, described it, and provided a logical reason for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club organizer. To reach a higher band, you could provide more vivid sensory details in your description of the Biryani to better engage the reader, and ensure the introduction more directly mirrors the purpose of the letter. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. Each paragraph has a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'The name of the dish' and 'I would like to add this dish', which help link your sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', or 'In addition to this'). The progression of ideas is clear, but the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'diverse', 'richness', and 'earliest convenience'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'got viral' (should be 'gone viral') and 'provide a different taste to eater' (should be 'provide a distinct flavor to the diner'). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat functional. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items related to food and cultural events to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'a recommendation of a food item in the upcoming event' (should be 'for the upcoming event') and 'can be cooked for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian' (should be 'can be prepared as either a vegetarian or non-vegetarian dish'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'it also helps in the digestion'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for small grammatical slips will help.
