Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope this letter finds you in good health. My name is Aman and I am a member of the International Students' club. I am really excited the event which our club is organizing to celebrate the popular food from all over the world.

I would like to suggest you to add a famous food item from my country in the event. I am from India and I believe that Kheer considered as one of the most famous dish all around the country would be the best option to represent Indian food diversity in the event.

The dish is basically a rice and milk pudding and in order to make it, milk and rice are boiled together and when rice are cooked, sugar is added to make it sweet. After the dish has attained desired consistency, the heat is turned off. For garnishing, several dry fruits and nuts can be added on top. Adding on, the best part is that it can be served either hot or cold.

I hold the opinion that it should be included in the event because it is a dessert and everyone aspire to try sweet dishes during any food event. Therefore, a large number of people will taste it and have a sweet impression imprinted in their mind about India. Moreover, there are other famous Indian dishes too however, these can be too spicy for everyone to handle. Thus, Kheer is the best option to be included in the event,

I hope you would consider my suggestion. I will be looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Aman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a descriptive explanation of what Kheer is, and gave logical reasons for its inclusion in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of an international food event. You maintained a consistent, helpful, and enthusiastic tone throughout the letter, which is essential for this task type.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'Thus' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'Adding on', which is not a standard cohesive phrase. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is used effectively to guide the reader through your proposal.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'consistency', 'garnishing', and 'diversity'. You are able to convey your meaning clearly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'suggest you to add' (should be 'suggest adding') and 'sweet impression imprinted in their mind' (which is slightly unnatural). While you successfully communicate your ideas, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and lacks the precision or sophistication required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if' or relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage, for example: 'when rice are cooked' (should be 'is cooked') and 'Kheer considered as one of the most famous dish' (should be 'is considered' and 'dishes'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of your letter. To improve, focus on ensuring that your verb forms and pluralisation are consistent throughout your writing.
