Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the mention of other cuisines and the absence of Indian food is stated twice in the second and third paragraphs. To reach a higher band, the ideas should be more concisely expressed to allow for more depth in the description of the dish or the cultural significance of the event. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the message. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'In this food event' are used at the start of two consecutive paragraphs, which limits the flow. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the transition between the offer and the description of the dish. While the overall progression is logical, the connection between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better paragraph transitions to ensure a smoother reading experience.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the necessary information. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'cuisines' and 'representative'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'every countries represent' (should be 'every country represents') and 'debuting Indian' (which is unclear). The repetition of words like 'popular' and 'dish' limits the range. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive sentence structures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('every countries represent', 'people making', 'India didn’t listed') and article usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary quotation marks around the dish name and issues with capitalization. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy, such as verb tenses and pluralization, would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
