Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to gently offer a suggestion for a popular dish from my nation (India) in the upcoming college event.

I want to suggest a sweet dish called Kheer, this is a one of the popular cuisine in India from north to south region. Everybody love this on special events like festivals , weddings, and large gatherings.

This dish is a mixture of four different ingredient such as brown sugar, milk, rice, and wheat. It only take 30 minutes to cook and needs to cool down for some time.

This is the best way to promote different cultural foods in this event, I am pretty sure everybody will like this dish because the flavor is very unique and tasty. It will enhance the taste level in the event.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you will deeply look-out my suggestion. I look forward for your prompt reply.

Your faithfully,

Simran.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: offering a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the description of the dish as a 'mixture of four different ingredients' is quite basic and lacks descriptive flair. To reach a higher band, you should provide more vivid details about the taste, texture, or cultural significance of the dish to better persuade the organiser. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the response remains focused throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'This dish is' and 'This is the best way to', which help link sentences. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') to create a smoother flow between your sentences and paragraphs. Overall, the structure is coherent and serves the task well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'cuisine', 'festivals', and 'gatherings'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'taste level' and 'look-out my suggestion'. Additionally, the phrasing 'one of the popular cuisine' contains a grammatical error (should be 'cuisines'). To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring subject-verb agreement when using plural nouns. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives would also help elevate your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For instance, 'Everybody love this' should be 'Everybody loves this', and 'It only take' should be 'It only takes'. There are also issues with punctuation and phrasing, such as the comma splice in 'I want to suggest a sweet dish called Kheer, this is a one of the popular cuisine'. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and avoid comma splices by using full stops or semicolons to separate independent clauses.
