Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my interest in the upcoming food fest.
I would like to book a stall for a popular hot beverage from my country India. I am talking about the Rasam with fried garlic. It belongs to the south-west part of India. It has mainly two components. Firstly, the broth which is made from thick coconut milk and has a sweet and sour taste because it is mixed with the chickpea flour. Secondly, fried garlic gives spicy and crispy kick to this dish it is the typical way to serve directly from the streets of India.
There are quite a few reasons why this dish can be one of the popular food attraction for crowd in food fest. To begin with, it is suitable for all age group as it is a mixture of sweet, sour and spicy flavours. Moreover, as it is the peak of winter season and food fest in scheduled for early morning individuals will love it as it compliments the chill weather.
Yours sincerely
Deep Ukani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it clearly, and provided logical reasons for its inclusion in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the explanation of why the dish suits the winter season. To reach a higher band, ensure that the description of the dish is factually consistent; for instance, Rasam is typically a spicy soup rather than a coconut-based beverage, but as this is a creative task, the clarity of your explanation is what matters most. You have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for the description and justification, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'To begin with', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid, rather than relying on a list-like structure for your arguments.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hot beverage', 'components', 'compliments', and 'flavours'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as referring to Rasam as a 'beverage' (it is usually a soup) and 'food fest' (which is slightly informal). You attempt to use descriptive language, which is good. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to describe the sensory experience of the food, such as 'aromatic', 'tangy', or 'traditional'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'food fest in scheduled' (should be 'is scheduled'), 'one of the popular food attraction' (should be 'attractions'), and 'all age group' (should be 'all age groups'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some missing commas after introductory phrases. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralisation will help improve your accuracy.
