Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to offer my help for the upcoming world food event. Well, I would love to cook a traditional dish of my home country for everyone to try.

Firstly, this dish is the fusion of variety of spices and vegetables. I am planning to make biryani and it can be served to more then 50 people. It is the dish we love to prepare in every festival we celebrate. It is a rich and aromatic rice dish cooked with combination of vegetables, tender meat and lots of spices such as cardamom, cloves and saffron.

This dish would be a great addition for the menu. It offers a comforting and hearty meal to the members. Lastly, this dish will offer burst of flavour and I assure everyone will request for some more.

Please let me know when can I start my preparation to cook this magnificent meal.

Regards,

Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly offer to make a dish, describe it as a rich, aromatic rice dish with vegetables and meat, and explain its suitability for the event by highlighting its comforting nature and popularity. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to satisfy the requirements of the task. You have maintained a consistent focus throughout the letter, ensuring the purpose of your communication is clear to the reader from the beginning to the end.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate the introduction, the description of the dish, and the concluding offer of help. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'It is', and 'Lastly' are used to guide the reader through the text. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. However, the structure is logical and easy to follow, and the use of referencing is clear throughout the response, meeting the requirements for a high band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using descriptive terms like 'aromatic', 'magnificent', and 'hearty' to convey your message effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'fusion of variety of spices' (should be 'a variety') and 'request for some more' (should be 'ask for seconds' or 'request more'). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey precise meaning and shows an attempt to use less common items. The language is natural and appropriate for the context of a student club event.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'more then 50' (should be 'more than') and 'cooked with combination' (should be 'a combination'). Additionally, 'I assure everyone will request' would be better phrased as 'I am sure everyone will request'. However, these errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear and well-constructed, showing a good level of control over basic and some complex grammatical forms.
