Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to inform you that I am going to participate in popular food from across the county event as I am a member of an international students' club.

Here, I am genuinely requesting to represent my county by making the food, which is "hotchpotch". Because, this food is established by my nation and it is well popular across the world.

Well, hotchpotch is the easiest and fastest recipe to prepare as it covers only few ingredients to cook: rice, some spices, few vegetables and water. That is all we want to cook and we can cook it in pressure cooker. Therefore, this recipe is the time consuming as well as representing of our nation, which should be included for this event to celebrate it well and memorable for us.

However, the main reason behind having this meal in this event, which is it represent our county and easy to cook and time consuming for anyone who will prepare it and the most focusing point is the food is mouth watering for every individual, who ever wants to taste it.

I hope you would accept my request to count the best food from my county in this memorable event.

Yours faithfully,

Smit.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, you mention that the dish is 'easy to cook' and 'represents the nation' multiple times throughout the letter. To improve, try to expand on the cultural significance of the dish or provide more specific details about the event itself to better engage the reader. The purpose of the letter is clear, but the content could be more varied and concise to avoid circular arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'Therefore' and 'However', though some of these are used incorrectly or in a way that does not fit the context. For example, 'However' is used to introduce a point that is actually a repetition of previous ideas rather than a contrast. Additionally, some sentences are quite long and run-on, which makes the flow feel a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used to connect distinct ideas rather than repeating the same ones will help improve your score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'participate', 'represent', and 'mouth-watering'. However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation. For example, you wrote 'time consuming' when you clearly meant 'time-saving' or 'quick to prepare'. You also used 'county' instead of 'country' throughout the text, which is a significant error that affects clarity. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise vocabulary and ensure that your word choices accurately reflect the meaning you intend to convey.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt to use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect article usage ('the food is established by my nation'), subject-verb agreement, and awkward phrasing ('the most focusing point is'). Some sentences are grammatically incomplete or confusing, such as 'I am writing to inform you that I am going to participate in popular food from across the county event'. While these errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to cause some difficulty. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for small errors would be beneficial.
