Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. Thank you for organizing the international food festival. It will provide an opportunity to taste the famous dishes from around the world.

My name is Pranusha, one of the member of the international student club. I am writing today to request to add a food which is famous in my place. Dish popularly known as biryani, it's a tasty and a balanced food. It is a healthy food same like a chipotle rice bowl, in addition to that the rice in it has more flavourful than chipotle.

When coming to the ingredients, it can be prepared in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian version so it can attract to the majority of the visitors. Additionally, it will give an opportunity for the south Indian business people to enter into Canadian restaurant business.

I strongly believe many people will enjoy the dish and it will create huge profits for the event. I sincerely hope you will consider my request and i would be happy to discuss if you need any further details about the dish.

Best regards,

Pranusha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it, and explained why it should be included. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why the dish should be included focuses on business opportunities for South Indian people in Canada, which feels slightly disconnected from the primary goal of a student food festival. To reach a higher band, ensure your reasons are more directly relevant to the event's purpose, such as cultural exchange or the popularity of the dish among students.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'In addition to that' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. For example, the transition between describing the dish and discussing business opportunities is abrupt. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the different points of the letter. To improve, try to use a wider range of linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is smoother and more natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'ingredients', 'vegetarian', and 'non-vegetarian'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'one of the member' (should be 'members') and 'more flavourful than' (should be 'more flavourful than a chipotle bowl'). The comparison to a 'chipotle rice bowl' is a bit informal and slightly awkward in this context. To improve, focus on using more precise adjectives and ensuring that your comparisons are grammatically and stylistically sound.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'one of the member' is a subject-verb agreement error, and 'it can attract to the majority' is an incorrect use of a preposition. Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 'i' in the final paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage.
