Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. Thank you for organizing the international food festival. It will provide an opportunity to taste the famous dishes from around the world.
My name is Pranusha, one of the members of the international student club. I am writing today to request to add a food which is famous in my place. Dish popularly known as biryani, it's a tasty and a balanced food. It is a healthy food similar to a chipotle rice bowl, in addition to that the rice in it has more flavour than chipotle.
When coming to the ingredients, it can be prepared in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions so it can attract the majority of the visitors. Additionally, it will give an opportunity for the south Indian business people to enter into Canadian restaurant business.
I strongly believe many people will enjoy the dish and it will create huge profits for the event. I sincerely hope you will consider my request and i would be happy to discuss if you need any further details about the dish.
Best regards,
Pranusha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task. You offered to make a dish, described it as a balanced, flavorful meal similar to a rice bowl, and explained its inclusion based on its versatility and potential for business exposure. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organizer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the connection between a student club food festival and 'south Indian business people' entering the Canadian restaurant market is slightly tangential and could have been better focused on the cultural benefits for the students. Overall, the task is fulfilled clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the description of the dish, and the closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'When coming to', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the start. To reach a higher band, ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother and that referencing is more precise throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'balanced', 'ingredients', and 'versatile' (implied). However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive in places, such as the frequent use of 'food' and 'dish'. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'request to add a food' (better: 'propose a dish') and 'famous in my place' (better: 'a staple in my home country'). While communication is never impeded, expanding your range to include more precise descriptive adjectives would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'it's a tasty and a balanced food' (unnecessary article), 'When coming to the ingredients' (awkward phrasing), and the lowercase 'i' in the final paragraph. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips that occur throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will help improve your accuracy.
