Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to provide you information that might be useful in the event that our club is organizing, which is about showcasing food from various parts of the world.
First, I would to talk about a well-known food that originated from the Philippines. Please allow me to introduce "Pinakbet"---a famous vegetable stew of the Filipinos living in the northern part of the country. It is no surprise that the local food is gaining attraction on the internet.
To support, I believe the reason for this is because of its unique taste and the way of it is cook. For instance, the traditional way to cook it is to use "Palayok"--a casserole stock pan. Additionally, one the ingredients used in cooking "Pinakbet" can only be found in the Philippines, and it is called "Bagoong na Isda", also known as Fish Paste.
Moreover, having "Pinakbet" included in the festival can definitely increase people awareness with regards to other Asian food. Although, the Filipino food is gaining popularity on different social media platforms, many people still do not know about it. Presenting the local food in the event would be one way to inform people about the Philippine culture since it is associated with pre-colonial Philippines.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,
Elisa

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a descriptive overview of 'Pinakbet', and offered a logical explanation for its inclusion in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail for the reader to understand the cultural significance of the dish. To reach a higher band, ensure that all explanations are fully integrated; for example, the connection between the dish and pre-colonial history is an excellent detail that adds depth to your response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Additionally', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different requirements of the task. However, there are minor issues with flow, such as the slightly awkward transition in the third paragraph ('To support, I believe...'). Improving the variety of linking phrases and ensuring that referencing is always precise would help elevate this score to the next level.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including specific cultural terms like 'Pinakbet', 'Palayok', and 'Bagoong na Isda'. This adds authenticity to your writing. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'gaining attraction' (should be 'gaining traction' or 'attracting attention') and 'people awareness' (should be 'people's awareness'). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and effectively. To improve, focus on collocations and ensure that the words you choose fit naturally into the context of your sentences.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I would to talk' (missing 'like'), 'the way of it is cook' (should be 'the way it is cooked'), and 'Although, the Filipino food' (incorrect comma usage). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of your letter. To achieve a higher band, focus on proofreading for small errors in verb forms and punctuation, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with greater precision.
