Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writting to request participation in the upcoming event in our club about cherrishing famous food from around the world.
I have always been fond of cooking myself and I believe that food is one of the fundamentals to understand the variety of cultures from different backgrounds. If you allow me, I would also like to prepare a dish called "Karahi" which is extremely famous in the country where I come from.
The dish is basically a type of chicken curry made with yougurt, tomato base, and a lot of spices, and will not require much time to make. It is a simple yet so amazingly delicious dish. I am assure that majority of individuals in the event will love it.
The reason I believe that this dish should be included is that it would represent my hometown and a lot of students from that part of the world would feel nostalgic and closer to home. It will also be a unique experience for the people with different ethenicities to taste food from another part of the world.
Yours faithfully,
Chris.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a descriptive explanation of the 'Karahi', and gave a logical reason for its inclusion in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of an international students' club. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening statement is more precise; for example, instead of 'request participation', you could state that you are writing to 'volunteer' to contribute a dish.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'The reason I believe' and 'It will also be', which help connect your thoughts. However, the transition between the introduction and the description of the dish could be smoother. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, as some of your current transitions are a bit mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly, such as 'fundamentals', 'nostalgic', and 'ethnicities'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'writting' (writing), 'cherrishing' (cherishing), and 'yougurt' (yogurt). Additionally, 'I am assure' is a grammatical error in word choice; it should be 'I am assured' or 'I am sure'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and ensuring correct word forms will help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the upcoming event in our club about cherrishing' (which should be 'to cherish') and 'the majority of individuals' (which requires 'the' before 'majority'). The sentence 'It is a simple yet so amazingly delicious dish' is slightly awkward in its construction. You have good control over basic grammar, but to achieve a higher band, you should aim for more error-free complex sentences and ensure that your verb forms and articles are used consistently and accurately.
