Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Luis,
I am writing to express my interest in preparing a dish from my country India for the upcoming event which is being organized to celebrate popular food from around the world.
I am planning to prepare a biryani for the event. This dish basically contains varied ingredients such as, rice, chicken and dry spices. Moreover, I already have an experience of cooking this dish for many people in past. And also, I can make a separate vegetarian biryani for those who don't eat chicken.
This will be a perfect dish to represent the cultural diversity of my country. In addition, this can be presented as the main course as many people can eat this as a proper meal. Please let me know, how you feel about this dish.
Thanks for your considerations and do let me know if you want me to make any further changes in ingredients.
Yours sincerely
Diksha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly offered to make a dish, described it as a biryani with specific ingredients, and provided a logical reason for its inclusion, namely its ability to represent cultural diversity and serve as a substantial main course. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organizer. To improve, you could expand slightly more on the 'why' by explaining how the dish might foster interaction among students or contribute to the event's atmosphere, which would further develop your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'And also' to link your ideas. While the progression is clear, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your transitions and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cultural diversity', 'main course', and 'ingredients'. However, the vocabulary is generally quite simple and functional. There are minor issues with word choice, such as 'I already have an experience of cooking', which would be more naturally phrased as 'I have experience cooking'. To improve, aim to incorporate more precise adjectives or collocations related to food and cultural events to show a wider range of lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the relative clause 'which is being organized' and the conditional 'for those who don't eat chicken'. There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'in past' (should be 'in the past') and 'how you feel about this dish' (which is slightly informal/awkward in this context; 'what you think of this suggestion' would be better). Most of your sentences are clear and communication is not impeded by these errors. Increasing the variety of complex structures would help improve this score.
