Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear lusi,

I am writing regarding the upcoming international food event organised by the student club. I would be delighted to contribute a popular dish from my country, the United Arab Emirates.

I would like to prepare chicken machboos, which is one of the most traditional dishes in the UAE. It consists of fragrant basmati rice cooked with chicken, tomatoes, onions and a mixture of spices such as cardamom, cinnamon and dried lemon. It has a rich flavour and is usually served as a large shared meal.

I believe this dish would be an excellent addition to event because it represents the cultural and hospitality of the UAE. It would also give students an opportunity to experience the distinctive flavours of Arabian cuisine. I would be happy to prepare enough portions for everyone and explain the ingredients and traditional method of preparation.

Please let me know if you would like any further information.

yours sincerely,

jyoti

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly offer to make a dish, describe it in detail, and provide a logical reason for its inclusion in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a polite and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the chicken machboos, which gives the reader a clear sense of the dish. You have successfully fulfilled all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'which is', 'it consists of', and 'it would also' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the offer to the description and finally the justification. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, using terms like 'delighted', 'contribute', 'traditional', 'fragrant', and 'distinctive'. There is a minor error in word choice where you wrote 'cultural and hospitality' instead of 'culture and hospitality'. However, this does not impede communication. You use specific culinary terms effectively, which adds precision to your description. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and naturally, showing an awareness of style suitable for this type of correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response shows a good control of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'I would like to prepare chicken machboos, which is one of the most traditional dishes in the UAE.' Punctuation is generally accurate, although there is a minor error in the salutation ('lusi' should be 'Luis') and a missing article in 'addition to event' (should be 'the event'). These are minor slips that do not affect the clarity of your writing. The majority of your sentences are error-free.
