Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing to express my interest regarding an international food event by an International Students' club.
As it's an international food event, I would like to offer the most popular dish from India. I am pretty sure whole bunch of people are going to love this dish.
The dish I was looking to introduce called the Butter Chicken. Basically, it is a very simple recipe consist of boneless chicken and traditional Indian spices. Moreover, it has lots of butter and milk cream.
Actually, butter chicken is the most liked Indian dish around the globe according to recent food magazine. So, I thought we should give it a try to this year food festival. Also, we can serve sweet yogurt drink and naan bread with the butter chicken, I think that will be the best combination.
I would be grateful if you could look into this suggestion at your earliest convenience. Thanks for your time.
Yours faithfully,
Cheril

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it as a simple recipe involving boneless chicken and spices, and explained its popularity as a reason for inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club member. To reach a higher band, ensure your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could explain the cultural significance of the dish or why it would specifically appeal to an international student audience beyond just its popularity in magazines. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the offer to the description and finally the justification. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Also', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. For example, the transition between describing the dish and explaining why it should be included could be more fluidly connected to improve the overall cohesion of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'at your earliest convenience' and 'around the globe' are used correctly. However, there are some instances of slightly informal or imprecise word choices, such as 'whole bunch of people' and 'give it a try to this year food festival'. These do not impede communication, but they do limit the range of vocabulary. To improve, focus on using more precise academic or formal collocations and avoid overly colloquial expressions in a semi-formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I was looking to introduce called the Butter Chicken' (missing 'is'), 'recipe consist of' (should be 'consists'), and 'to this year food festival' (should be 'to this year's food festival'). These errors are frequent but do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent. To achieve a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and possessives, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
