Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope this letter finds you in good health. The reason of writing this is to appreciate your efforts in organising the Food Festival, and to inform you about my full support and participation.
As a member of the International Students' Club, I would also like to participate by making a popular dish called Yakhni Biryani for this event. This way, I can represent my country, and simultaneously appreciate our traditional foods.
Furthermore, this Yakhni Biryani is a mixture of rich pudding with chicken, but the chicken firstly boiled with different local spices for approximately 20-25 minutes and than meat is separate from this. The rice is cooked with that remaining spiced water. At the end, this will provide an delicious taste to each drain of rice and the meat.
This dish is consider as a national dish. Therefore, I believe it should be included in this food event. This will not only provide a good taste to the event, and will similarly enhance a positive image of my country.
I am looking forward to seeing you at the event, and hope everything will go according to the plan.
Best wishes,
Ayaz

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a description of the Yakhni Biryani, and explained its cultural significance and suitability for the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a polite and professional register throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands both the nature of the dish and your motivation for including it. The response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Therefore', and 'not only... but also' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences in the second paragraph is slightly mechanical, and the transition between the description of the cooking process and the explanation of why it should be included could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of your request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'simultaneously', 'represent', and 'national dish'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'each drain of rice' (likely meaning 'grain') and 'mixture of rich pudding' (which is an unusual way to describe a savory rice dish). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation. You successfully use topic-specific vocabulary related to cooking, which adds to the clarity of your description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The reason of writing' (should be 'for writing'), 'chicken firstly boiled' (missing auxiliary verb 'is'), and 'than meat is separate' (should be 'then' and 'separated'). Additionally, 'This dish is consider' should be 'is considered'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice constructions.
