Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing this letter with regards to offer a popular dish from my country for the event which club is organising on 10th September 2026 in Brookes Hall.
There are many popular dishes from my country India, but it all depends on the taste buds of particular person. We have sweet, spicy, tangy and sour dishes to offer. I would be offering Pani Puri also known as Gol Gappe. This dish is particular very famous all around the country. The specialty about this dish is, one can make it in numerous variety.
Pani Puri has 3 ingredients named puri which is named from deep fried whole wheat flour, stuffing which is made from sprouts and chilli coriander water also with tamarind chutney. This dish has mix of flavours with variety of stuffing like potatoes..
I want to include this particular dish in the event since most of the students are from India and I believe many international students would like this dish as we can make it according their taste buds if they want sweet or spicy.
Looking forward in meeting you during the event.
Kind regards,
Saurabh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it, and provided a clear reason for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the ingredients of 'Pani Puri', the description could be more vivid to help the reader visualize the dish. Additionally, the explanation for why it should be included relies heavily on the fact that many students are Indian, rather than focusing on the cultural experience for all attendees. Expanding on the unique sensory experience of the dish would have strengthened the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the transition between sentences could be smoother; phrases like 'The specialty about this dish is' and 'I want to include this particular dish' are functional but lack variety. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the use of 'it' in 'but it all depends on the taste buds', which does not clearly refer back to a specific noun. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using specific terms like 'tangy', 'sprouts', and 'tamarind chutney'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I am writing this letter with regards to offer' (should be 'with regard to offering') and 'one can make it in numerous variety' (should be 'in numerous varieties'). While you attempt to use descriptive language, some phrasing is slightly unnatural. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'which club is organising' (missing 'the'), 'particular very famous' (should be 'particularly'), and 'Looking forward in meeting you' (should be 'to meeting you'). There are also minor punctuation issues, such as the double period at the end of the third paragraph. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
