Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to you today in respect to the upcoming event of celebrating well known foods around the world. As a Nigerian, it came to my notice that people international have not tried some of our meal, which I would like for you to include in the menu. Our world breaking Guinness meal should be tasted and loved outside Nigeria

I believe you have tried our Nigerian Jollof rice, because I heard you saying how you loved how spicy it tasted last time in our seminar class, You can testify how great and yummy it tasted. Now imagining other students trying the world winning party Jollof rice from a Nigerian Pot, it sound amazing just with the thought alone. Please you should consider giving our Jollof rice a chance to prove why it is known as the best.

I am very certain everyone deserve to eat an African meal, especially our Nigerian Jollof rice. This is because, it can be paired with proteins and vegetables for weight loss or even for weight gain, so anyone can enjoy it depending what combination you eat it with.

Yours Faithfully,

Elizabeth Martins

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task. You successfully offer to make a dish, describe it as 'Nigerian Jollof rice', and explain its suitability for the event. However, the development of ideas is somewhat informal and repetitive. For instance, the explanation of why it should be included focuses heavily on personal opinion rather than the event's context. To reach a higher band, ensure your arguments are more focused on the event's goal of celebrating international food, rather than just personal preference or nutritional benefits. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a club member, though it leans towards being overly casual.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'This is because' and 'Now imagining', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the introduction and the description of the dish feels abrupt. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'people international have not tried some of our meal'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between your arguments would enhance the overall logical progression of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, but there are several instances of awkward word choices and non-standard collocations. For example, 'people international' should be 'international students' or 'people from other countries', and 'world breaking Guinness meal' is an imprecise way to describe a dish. You also use informal descriptors like 'yummy' and 'great', which are acceptable in a semi-formal letter but limit your ability to demonstrate a more sophisticated range. Focusing on more precise adjectives and standard collocations will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that distract the reader. Examples include 'it came to my notice that people international have not tried some of our meal' (should be 'meals'), 'it sound amazing' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'everyone deserve' (should be 'deserves'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in 'last time in our seminar class, You can testify'. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct grammatical markers.
