Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to offer to prepare a popular dish from my country India, for our international students club food festival.

I would like to make a vegetable biryani, which is traditional rice cooked, with fragrant spices, fresh vegetables and herbs. It is usually served with yogurt or raita, making it both delicious and filling. the combination of colourful ingredients and rich aroma make it attractive to people of all ages.

I believe this dish would be a great addition to the event, because it represents rich culture and culinary traditions of India. Its also available for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian as well, as different version can be prepared. Many International students may not have the opportunity to try authentic Biryani, therefore this would be a great chance for them to experience a famous Indian meal.

Please let me know if you would like me to prepare enough servings for everyone or if there any specific requirement for the event. I would be delighted to make celebration a success.

Best wishes,

Baljeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a descriptive explanation of vegetable biryani, and gave logical reasons why it would be a valuable addition to the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a helpful and enthusiastic persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of an international students' club. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail about the 'fragrant spices' or the cultural significance to further enhance the depth of your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'which is', 'therefore', and 'because', which help connect your sentences. However, the transition between some ideas could be smoother. For example, the start of the third paragraph could be better linked to the previous one. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, using terms like 'culinary traditions', 'authentic', and 'fragrant spices'. This shows an ability to use topic-specific language effectively. There are a few minor slips, such as 'different version can be prepared' (should be 'versions') and 'make celebration a success' (missing an article). While the vocabulary is sufficient and generally precise, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions would elevate the response to a higher band. The current range is adequate for the task and conveys your meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for smooth reading. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as the missing apostrophe in 'Its' (should be 'It's') and a missing article in 'make celebration a success' (should be 'make the celebration'). Additionally, there is a slight punctuation error in the second paragraph: 'traditional rice cooked, with fragrant spices'—the comma is unnecessary here. Despite these occasional slips, your control over grammar is strong, and these errors do not impede communication at all.
