Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to offer the popular food of my country in the event of international students' club.

Firstly, I would like to explain the situation in detail, I am a member of an international student's club. the club is organizing an event for the celebration of famous food around different region. So, I can make a popular dish "Biryani" of my country.

I would like to mention that the biryani is famous and popular because of its delicious taste. The main ingredient in biryani is rice, we use the special kind of rice in the biryani, named "basmati rice". Other ingredients are also making the taste of biryani incredible like chicken, and many different spices.

Another thing, I want to share with you is biryani should be included in this event, and reason is this is our traditional dish also and many people would try new experience and enjoy it a lot.

Let me know what you think, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the dish and the reasons for its inclusion could be more detailed to fully engage the reader. While the task requirements are met, the response lacks the depth and sophistication required for a higher band score. Ensure that each point is expanded upon with more descriptive language and clearer reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly' and 'Another thing'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of linking words could be more varied and natural. For example, the transition between the description of the ingredients and the justification for including the dish feels a bit abrupt. Improving the use of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would significantly enhance the overall structure of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'traditional dish' and 'ingredients'. However, there is a lack of flexibility and precision. Some phrasing is repetitive or slightly unnatural, such as 'explain the situation in detail' when it is not strictly necessary, or 'popular food of my country'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise collocations and a wider range of descriptive adjectives to make your writing more engaging and sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'in the event of international students' club' (should be 'at the international students' club') and 'the club is organizing an event for the celebration of famous food around different region' (should be 'regions'). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as comma splices. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
