IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You are a member of an International Students' club. The club is organising an event to celebrate popular food from around the world.
Write a letter to the event organiser, Luis. In your letter
- offer to make a popular dish from your country
- describe what this dish is
- explain why it should be included in the event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Luis,
I am writing to express my desire to make a dish for the upcoming food fair. The food fair is one of the most famous festivals among the international students, as members are able to taste new foods from all over the world and gain knowledge about different cultures. To participate in this program, I would like to make the most popular dish from Bangladesh, called Biriyani.
Even though biriyani is not a dish that requires a long process to make, it is a tasty and flavorful food in Bangladesh. The dish is made of steamed aromatic rice mixed and cooked with meats seasoned with world-famous Asian spices. I have decided to use mutton, as some club members are allergic to beef.
Having this famous dish in such a multicultural event will allow me to introduce my culture and food types among the students. Club members will be able to taste and immerse themselves in Bangladeshi culture.
Please let me know if you need a full list of the ingredients to display for anyone with dietary restrictions.
I look forward to your prompt reply.
Sincerely,
Meraz Prodhan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offer to make a dish, provide a sufficient description of Biriyani, and explain its value to the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a professional yet friendly register. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of why the dish is suitable for a multicultural event. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task by providing relevant and coherent information throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Even though', 'as', and 'Having this famous dish' to link your thoughts effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the offer, the description, and the justification. The overall structure is coherent and easy to navigate.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'multicultural', 'dietary restrictions', 'aromatic', and 'immerse'. The word choices are generally precise and natural. While the vocabulary is sufficient and effective for the task, it stays within a fairly standard range. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions related to food or cultural exchange. However, there are no significant errors in word choice, and the language used is consistently accurate and fits the formal tone of the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your control over grammar is strong, with very few errors. For instance, the use of passive voice in 'The dish is made of...' and the conditional structure in 'Please let me know if you need...' are handled correctly. Punctuation is accurate throughout the letter. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the few minor slips do not impede communication at all. The grammatical range is sufficient to convey your message clearly and professionally.
