Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to offering to include one of the most lovable and well-known dish called a Dosa from my home country India. It's an amazing cuisine from South Indian states. Definitely, I assure you that this dish will be the most popular dish among all the food items from all around the world.

Basically, Dosa is made from a fermented batter of rice and lentils, with a few table spoons of curd and a pinch of salt. It is served with a curry called Sambar, made up of lentil-based vegetable spiced curry, and cooked with pigeon peas and tamarind broth. It's texture is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It tastes delicious when this crape is served with other chutneys like a coconut and a little spicy orange chutney.

A lot of benefits of eating Dosas include an improvement in gut health because it goes under long hours of fermentation. It does supplies healthy complex carbohydrates for active daily fuel needed by our body. The fermentation process lowers the glycemic index compared to unfermented refined grains, leading to a steadier insulin response.

I am very excited to present this dish into the Food Fest we have next week. I would suggest to look at the recipe and I am sure you'll love it and include into the event to taste by every other else.

Yours Sincerely,

Viral Siddhapura

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You offered to make a Dosa, provided a clear description of its ingredients and texture, and explained its health benefits as a reason for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the dish and its benefits. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the health benefits and the event itself is more explicitly linked, as the current focus is slightly more on nutrition than on why it would be a popular choice for a global food festival.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for description and benefits, and a concluding paragraph. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Basically' and 'A lot of benefits', to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. For instance, the transition between the description of the Dosa and its health benefits could be more fluid to enhance the overall flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'fermented batter', 'complex carbohydrates', and 'glycemic index' appropriately. There are some minor word choice errors, such as 'lovable' (which is usually reserved for people or pets rather than food) and 'crape' (which should be 'crêpe'). Additionally, 'every other else' is non-standard phrasing. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and shows an attempt to use more sophisticated terminology related to food and nutrition. Focusing on more natural collocations will help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you show control over complex ideas, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I am writing to offering' (should be 'to offer'), 'It's texture' (should be 'Its'), and 'It does supplies' (should be 'It supplies'). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you need to increase the frequency of error-free sentences and ensure consistent control over basic grammar, particularly subject-verb agreement and the use of possessive pronouns versus contractions. Your punctuation is generally functional and supports the clarity of your message.
