Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter as I'm member of an International student's club and the club is organized an event to celebrate popular food. I would like to offer you our country's famous dish is rice with beans.

In this dish is nutrient rich in protein, carbs and many other. This dish is not delicious but also helps to feel good and full for long time and people will enjoy eating during the event as it is healthiest and easy to make and cook.

In upcoming event, nowadays several individuals eat junk food and they didn't release the causes of that food. Individuals eat it just for taste but by offering healthy dishes such as rice with beans, people will release that healthy food is good choice for health and taste as well.

I hope you will like my offer and add in the upcoming event. I'm so excited to come in event and enjoy the wonderful dishes.

Yours Sincerely,

Tom

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task. You offered to make a dish, described it as rice and beans, and explained its health benefits. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation of why it should be included is a bit repetitive, focusing heavily on health rather than the social or cultural aspect of the event. To improve, try to expand on the cultural significance of the dish or how it would specifically enhance the atmosphere of the international club event. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an organizer, though the structure could be more refined to ensure a smoother flow of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'In this dish' and 'In upcoming event', but these transitions are sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural. The logical progression between sentences is occasionally interrupted by grammatical errors, which makes some parts of your argument harder to follow. For example, the transition between describing the dish and explaining its benefits could be smoother. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'not only... but also') would help improve the flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'nutrient rich', 'protein', and 'junk food'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'didn't release the causes' (likely meaning 'realize the consequences') and 'add in the upcoming event' (which should be 'add it to the upcoming event'). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise vocabulary and ensuring that collocations are natural. The range is sufficient for the task, but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('the club is organized' instead of 'is organizing'), article usage ('as I'm member'), and word order. Additionally, there are errors in sentence construction, such as 'This dish is not delicious but also helps', which is missing the 'only' in the 'not only... but also' structure. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for small errors would significantly improve your score.
