Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Hye Luis,

I hope you are doing great. I am so excited to heard about the event organised by our club for the popular food from around the world.

To begin with, I would like to say that I always wants to participate in cooking competition but I never get any chance to do that. But now as a member of the organisation I have get a chance to make the most popular dish of Pakistan that is Biryani, even the white people and all South Asian people love those rice.

This dish is comes with rice and chicken with lots of tomato puree in it with potatoes. This dish is full of protein and carbs in it. You can also make it with any kind of meat. I am thinking to put the lamb in it as, everyone here in Canada they usually like lamb. Beside that , I will make some vegetable biryani option as most of the people they prefer vegan.

I hope this idea of mine make the event more popular as its the best dish with full of nutrition.

Thank you for your time and consideration and giving me this opportunity. I hope you will give me the thumbs up at your earliest convenience.

Best Regards

Raana

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club member. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the dish is popular, the description of the ingredients is a bit informal and repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure your explanation of why it should be included is more persuasive and clearly linked to the event's goal of celebrating international food. The content is relevant, but the expression of ideas could be more sophisticated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the offer to the description and finally the justification. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps the reader follow your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate, such as the use of 'Beside that' and 'But now'. Some sentences are linked in a way that feels slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of transition words and ensuring they are used correctly would enhance the flow of your writing significantly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'protein', 'carbs', and 'vegan'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'excited to heard' (should be 'hear'), 'make the most popular dish' (should be 'prepare'), and 'give me the thumbs up' (which is too informal for this context). While your meaning is generally clear, the lack of precision and occasional errors in word formation prevent a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('I always wants', 'This dish is comes'), tense errors ('I have get a chance'), and punctuation issues (missing commas, incorrect spacing). These errors are noticeable and occur in almost every sentence. While they do not completely impede communication, they demonstrate a lack of control over basic grammatical structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tenses will help improve your accuracy.
