Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter about the upcoming event where our team is participating as well and I have a special dish to make the event more vibrant with the taste.

The dish named biryani which is one of the well-known cuisine among our country. Biryani includes different ingredients and vegetables which makes the dish delicious and loveable. Its not only gives you taste of flavors but will connect you with different culture.

Furthermore, I think this dish should be definitely on the list for the event as in this grand celebration bringing people from various parts of the country and it may gives them to try something unusual than their food apart from that, we are going to prepare the free meal for the whole organisation next month if our target will hit 100 people to try our special dish.

I look forward to hearing from you to accept our offer.

Yours truly,

Ria

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the dish is quite brief, and the explanation for why it should be included is slightly confusing, particularly the mention of a 'free meal' and 'target' which seems disconnected from the main request. To improve, ensure your supporting details are more clearly linked to the purpose of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'apart from that' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or forced. The sentence structure within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the third paragraph where the connection between the event and the 'free meal' offer is unclear. Improving the flow between sentences would help your ideas progress more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'vibrant', 'well-known', and 'celebration'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'cuisine among our country' (should be 'in our country') and 'loveable' (which is not typically used to describe food). You also have some minor errors in phrasing like 'gives them to try' instead of 'gives them the opportunity to try'. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and focusing on natural collocations will help you reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'Its not only gives you' (should be 'It not only gives you'), 'it may gives them' (should be 'it may give them'), and 'if our target will hit' (should be 'if our target hits'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs.
