Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to express my interest in presenting a popular food item in the food festival celebration.

As an international student from India, I have been eagerly waiting for this opportunity to introduce a north India delicacy -Mutter Paneer- to all the attendees. It is very popular among people who prefer to taste flavorful cuisines, which are not spicy, thereby making it a suitable dish for the event.

The ingredients are healthy and with abundant nutrients. It includes a thick gravy prepare with blended onions, tomatoes, and a dried mixture of special spices, toppled with medium-size chunks of cheese (paneer) and usually served with a thick bread called Naan.

I recommend including Mutter Paneer in the menu as it is fairly easy to serve and highly likely to be praised by visitors of all kinds of background and ethnicity. In addition, I communicated with the organizers and came to know that until then nobody else was going to prepare a South Asian dish. This will bring the variety on the table.

I hope you to consider my suggestions and am looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Nishant

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully covers all parts of the bullet points required by the task prompt. You successfully offer to make a popular dish ('Mutter Paneer'), provide a clear and vivid description of what the dish is (including its gravy ingredients and paneer chunks served with Naan), and explain why it should be included in the event, noting its universal appeal and the lack of South Asian dishes. The tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal, which fits the general training letter format. All ideas are well-developed and relevant, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically sequenced, moving smoothly from the statement of purpose to the description of the dish, the justification for its inclusion, and finally the concluding remarks. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the recipe details and the reasons for selection. Cohesive devices are handled reasonably well, with phrases like 'In addition' used to add supporting points. Although a few transitions could be more seamlessly integrated, the overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'express my interest', 'flavorful cuisines', and 'universal appeal' (implied by context) show an attempt to use less common lexical items. However, there are a few minor collocation and word choice inaccuracies, such as 'thick gravy prepare' instead of 'prepared', and 'bring the variety on the table' instead of 'bring variety to the table'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as participial phrases ('toppled with medium-size chunks') and relative clauses ('which are not spicy'). There are some grammatical errors present, notably 'thick gravy prepare' (morphology error) and 'I hope you to consider' (incorrect verb complementation). Additionally, the sentence 'I hope you to consider my suggestions and am looking forward to' has a minor structural awkwardness. Nevertheless, these errors do not impede communication, and you maintain good control over the majority of your sentences.
