Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task instructions. You offered to make a popular dish from your country by stating, 'I am very excited about the upcoming international food event... its called 'Khichdi'.' You described what the dish is by explaining that 'this dish is very light food and its very healthy food' and mentioning the ingredients such as rice, vegetables, and 'Ghee'. Finally, you explained why it should be included in the event, noting that it is vegetarian, easy to digest, and quick to make at home for busy students. All parts of the prompt are covered and the tone is appropriately friendly and semi-formal. Ideas are relevant, although some points like the preparation details are somewhat repetitive.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The letter follows a clear overall arrangement with standard opening and closing conventions ('Dear Luis,' and 'Your sincerely,'). Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, description, justification, and sign-off. However, cohesion is frequently mechanical and sometimes faulty. For instance, the transition 'We are included in this event because' is grammatically awkward, and referencing in sentences such as 'so the can save them time' creates slight confusion regarding pronoun usage. While there is an attempt to use cohesive markers like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', the logical progression between sentences is occasionally hindered by repetitive phrasing and grammatical inaccuracies.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts and food-related terms such as 'vegetarian', 'ingredients', 'vegetables', and 'Ghee'. However, the lexical range is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice and form, such as 'We will plane to organized' (planned to organize) and 'we can added' (add). Less common items are attempted, but inaccuracies in collocation and word formation prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. Spelling is generally acceptable, but vocabulary control remains at a basic level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense and agreement issues such as 'We will plane to organized', 'In this dish they are used rice', and 'so the can save them time'. Punctuation is also problematic, particularly with comma splices and run-on sentences, such as 'Because this dish is very light food and its very healthy food.' While meaning is generally conveyed, these frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.
